THE DUNEDIN MONTESSORI ACADEMY

Montessori education is the work of  D.Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, who first established her unique learning environment in Rome, Italy in the early 1900's. She found that there are “sensitive periods” in a child’s development when the child shows unusual interest in certain areas and subjects. She describes the minds of young children as "absorbent": joyfully and spontaneously ready to soak up knowledge as a sponge soaks up water.

A Montessori education is an individualized system of learning. It stresses the importance of adapting the child's learning environment to their developmental level and of the role of physical activity in absorbing academic concepts and practical skills.

It provides a social, academic and spiritual atmosphere through a prepared environment where the children experience success and delight in the learning process. Moving from simple to complex tasks, the child learns at their own pace, continually moving forward to reach their individual potential.

This unique approach to learning is what makes the Montessori education distinctive.
